Monday Night TV

I can tell this is going to be one of those threads where no one cares to discuss my topic. That's okay, it has nothing to do with politics or crime. But I'm writing about it anyway.

Tonight is the final episode of The Bachelorette where Deanna picks between Colorado snowboarder Jesse Csincsak and Seattle single dad Jason Mesnick. (A pretty good synopsis is here.)

The two hour finale was filmed during the first ten days in May, in Georgia where Deanna's family lives and in the Bahamas where she makes her final choice after both propose.

We don't know who she chooses, only that sometime between that final day of shooting in May and last week, she got engaged.

As to who I think will win: [More...]

First, I want Jesse to win. He's from Colorado. I think he's hotter physically with a cooler attitude, is more fun and leads a more exciting life than Jason. He also doesn't have an ex-wife in the neighborhood and a toddler for whom they share parenting responsibility. At 26, those are the things that would have made a big impression on me.

Other things that weigh towards Jesse: Their personalities, ages, athletic abilities and sense of adventure are more evenly matched. She's a spitfire whether it's on 4-wheelers, jet-skis or driving a race car. She even jumped into snowboarding with no fear. Jesse keeps up with her on all of them. Jason also may be athletic, but it's obvious he is more into golf and baseball. Much more the straight and narrow type.

Jesse and Deanna were friends for weeks (at least three, which is half the length of the series) and they both say that makes for a stronger relationship. By now, they have a pretty intense physical bond as well. He also keeps her on edge so she doesn't know quite what to expect from him. She often says that she loves surprises.

As to actually will win, I can't say. In the end, it's not really about the guys and Deanna, it's only about Deanna and what she wants from life. That's impossible to predict from a reality television show.

She's 26. I suspect she will choose Jason if she wants a secure, stable life and honestly doesn't mind that he's been married before, has a three year old and is limited by the geographic or mobility restrictions that go with that life.

She'll choose Jesse if she's not quite ready to give up the media spotlight or wants a guy who is adventurous, mobile and doesn't have his whole life mapped out yet.

Since Jesse is from Colorado, I actually write about this for 5280.com. As of yesterday, I'm one of Jesse's 300 friends on My Space (sure to be 1,000 by tomorrow)and ABC has added me to the media conference call tomorrow morning where Deanna and her fiancee will be taking reporters' questions and then the guy she didn't choose will come on to answer more questions.

So, Go Jesse. I hope Colorado will get to see more of Deanna. If not, as Deanna always says, everything happens for a reason.

If you have any thoughts on the the show, feel free to join in. I'll also put up an open thread for other topics.

Update on today's conference call here.

    I'm watching right now Jeralyn.... (5.00 / 1) (#1)

...and I think she is going to pick Jesse.

I didn't care for her family's attitude towards Jesse, by the way. I would love it if Jesse dated my daughter. And Jason was sucking up too much for my taste. Just too Mr. Perfect for me.

My 14 yr old son and I got hooked on the trashy (very) Tila Tequila Shot at Love. It has opened up all kinds of discussion on how one would actually go about picking a partner (not the way Tila does it). He rooted for the dykey Dani in the first edition but in the second liked the guy (though none were up to our high standards).
Fascinating. He will miss it when he finds out I've turned off the cable.

and he makes her laugh.  For those two reasons alone she should pick him.

I decided to watch for Jeralyn but I don't want to give any spoilers.

I'm 2 hours behind ET, the AFTR is almost over. I purposely didn't log on until she made her choice so I would be surprised. Thanks...I'll do an update when this part is over.

....I think they edited the show to make it seem like there was doubt. From what she said in the "after" show, I think she was very smitten by him all along, but I guess they had to make it look like the other guys had a chance.

I can't imagine making this sort of commitment and including a television audience.  When I take that into consideration I find the whole deal too absurd to watch.  I've gotta give Jeralyn credit though for being able to have a sizing the nominees up rundown for the whole world to read about that I have only been able to have in private conversations with my best girlfriends ;)

    She's not in love! (none / 0) (#2)

Jesse it is. But, is she in like, only? She made one huge mistake this season and that was to run away from unresolvable love, because of what happened in season 1. Love does not work itself out on a reality TV show.

    You're not alone! (none / 0) (#3)
by NJDem on Mon Jul 07, 2008 at 08:21:53 PM EST
Too bad no one else will admit they watch :)

I know you're rooting for Jesse, but I really like Jason and I think in the long run he makes more sense for her.  I guess I think Jesse is too much of a free spirit--not that that's bad, at all, but she seems more like the security type.

Jason's very loving, serious, but has this kinda cute boyish energy (and he's my type).  He was also so adorable with her aunt and uncle(?).

I don't know...I've been wrong before.  I think the last Bachelorette was the only one from these shows to actually get married.

    before I posted :)

So I guess I'm the only one pulling for Jason--though I think she may go for Jesse like the other Bach'ette by choosing the unlikely one, which seemed to work out well.  Isn't he from Denver? or was it Phoenix?

But I disagree--Jeremy was the one who was too perfect, but no real chemistry.

proposal involved after such a short time and under such other-wordly conditions - there's simply nothing "real-life" about any of it.

Are there any success stories other than Trista and Ryan?  I confess to having watched that season, but that was it.

    Love is quirky (5.00 / 1) (#27)

I have a friend, who in his late 30s, was leaving town for a long weekend and agreed to allow a friend of a friend to stay in his apartment.  She arrived, he let her in, and never left.  They were married within a week. It's now 8+ years later, twin boys, etc., and they are very happy.  I think it's best not to assume what works in one situation applies to another or what works for us works for everyone else -- at least when it comes to love.

One thing I thought about which would give the (none / 0) (#16)
by Angel on Mon Jul 07, 2008 at 09:08:17 PM EST
ending a real twist was that she picks Jeremy.  She really had something with him but he just wouldn't open up enough, thus he didn't receive a rose last week.  I was thinking after last week's show that the producers would fly him back to wherever they were taping and give him another shot off-camera; Deanna decides she loves him and the other two guys are left to pick up their jaws off the sand in the Bahamas!

    show!

I got really turned off to the whole show after years went by and Byron never married Mary and Mary got arrested for domestic abuse.  :(

(Well, it wasn't only that...  It was all the shows I watched that never ended in any sort of real romance:  The military doctor, the doctor that moved to Colorado, the Firestone-rejectee who became a Bachelorette, etc.)

    What a cheeeeeezzy show!  ;-)

I never used to watch this stuff (none / 0) (#36)

and then one day when I had major house-cleaning to do, I got hooked on an "America's Next Top Model" marathon.

    Yea, verrily, now I understand...

America's Next Top Model because I've watched that one myself.

    I also happen to love:

    1. Amazing Race
    2. So You Think You Can Dance
    3. Beauty and the Geek

I also end up watching American Idol (even though I don't want to) because it seems like everyone else is watching it.

But The Bachelor and The Bachelorette are the cheeeeeeeziest cheese-fests in the Universe!!  They are right up there with Survivor and Big Brother!  They are all like "The Ultimate Cheese!

Anyway, Jeralyn strikes me as a woman with more substance.  I'd expect her to tell me that she is watching KCET or Amazing Race.  Never The Bachelorette!  ;-)

I don't watch that show - just have never seen it.  Didn't understand what I saw of clips from either The Bachelor or The Bachelorette a couple of years ago.  How can ANYone fall 'in love' in a few weeks with the whole world watching your every breath?

But I was fascinated by the Jesse / Jason story you described, as I have a deep soapy streak and so I wanted to see what these guys looked like and went to google news.  There I overindulged in this, and I must say that Deanna sounds like someone who has no idea what being 'in love' or 'loving' really is, but she must be pretty emotional.  It's not fair for me to say, but her statements seem a bit self-centered, but what else would you expect to meet in an environment like this?  As a mother of a son, I'd be worried about my son!   And at the same time Jesse doesn't seem the greatest long-term shot!  But apparently they really did connect.

So, I will have to see some clips, I guess, to get a better sense of these things.  Until then, here's a strangely fascinating  interview with Graham (who seems sort of narcissistic! in an ironically honest way -- especially in the photos at his website) and also some interviews you've probably read.

These people get smitten so fast -- is it the atmosphere and pressure?  The money?  The exposure?  Scary!

My main light-addictions last year were to American Idol 2007, Desperate Housewives (which is SO funny and well-directed) and Brothers & Sisters (reallly well-acted).

word for it. I became fascinated with the "sleuthers" while covering the show. It's like a complete addiction to those on the Internet message boards. They have been at it 24/7 since May. The posters not only analyze the episodes and previews of coming attractions, they break down the videos of each episode and preview into screencaps and then blow them up, flip them, or do whatever else can be done to them to figure out what's going to happen next. Every word, piece of clothing, jewelry, hair strand is dissected. They analyze the edits by the producers for clues.
